Vermont rally for safe roads

Dear Members, Activist and Friends,

Tomorrow you can join the call to make our roads and streets safe places for everyone to walk, run and ride. Together with the Vermont Highway Safety Alliance, AAA, Ride Safe Vermont, and many others, Local Motion is organizing Vermont’s first-ever statewide rally for safe roads tomorrow evening, Friday, September 25, on the State House lawn in Montpelier. The event starts at 5:30.

Lt. Gov. Phil Scott will headline a roster of organizations and agencies taking action to improve safety for everyone. Given the unusual numbers of tragedies on Vermont’s roads so far this year, this event is too important to stay home. Will you be there?

Please RSVP here.

And this event is about more than safety. It’s also about fun! Here is a sampling of what’s on deck:

  • Free bike lights and mirrors for the first 100 riders! Local Motion will be offering the items to the first 100 people who show up on their bikes. (For mirror and light, arrive early. Distribution starts at 5 pm.)
  • A protected bike lane demonstration
  • Fatal Vision goggles!  “Fatal Vision” goggles that simulate the threshold of being intoxicated will be available to try on.
  • Drawings for free “Better by Bike” t-shirts
  • Gold Sprints! Two bikes on stands are paired, and use a computerized course to race against each other in a mad dash to an imaginary finish line. How fast can you go nowhere?
  • Horses! Yes, horses. We all need safe roads, particularly those of us whose transportation can get spooked by reckless driving. The Vermont Horse Council will be there to join the call. If you’re nice, you might even get to pet a horse.

And that’s just the start! Please come on out and join us.

Hope to see you there!
