Vermont agribusiness service providers expand to include wood product industry

Vermont Farm Viability Program and Vermont Agriculture Development Program partner to serve forestry sector businesses

Montpelier, VT – Business planning and technical assistance previously available to the agricultural sector is growing to include wood product and forestry industry businesses. The Vermont Farm Viability Program and the Vermont Agriculture Development Program are increasing services designed to help forestry sector businesses increase profits, improve management, develop new value-added products, and become more efficient.

Applications are now being accepted for forestry sector businesses such as loggers, mills, kilns, and wood product industries to receive business planning and technical assistance services provided by the Vermont Farm Viability Program and the Vermont Agriculture Development Program. A $100,000 grant from the Working Lands Enterprise Fund to the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board will support the delivery of these new services.

“Vermont is committed to supporting and expanding our value-added farm and forest industries,” says Governor Shumlin. “By investing in technical assistance and infrastructure projects, these grants will help farmers and those who work our woodlands prosper and grow sustainably for future generations.”

Program participants will receive in-depth, one-on-one assistance with strategic planning, marketing, feasibility analysis, financial record-keeping, management, cash flow, and accessing and utilizing capital.

“Vermont’s working landscape captures Vermont’s culture, character, and community,” says Secretary of Agriculture Chuck Ross. “The Working Lands Enterprise Fund provides a deeper investment in Vermont’s working lands and its people. It represents a historic initiative by the State to advance Vermont’s forestry and forest products sector in a way that has never been done before.”
