Affordable Geothermal District Projects in NYC – Maria Gallucci – Canary Media – The second half of this article focuses on two exciting geo projects in Queens and Brooklyn. “Arverne East’s developers say their geothermal district heating system will be the largest in New York City when completed in the coming years. For now, however, that title belongs to a new beachside project in Brooklyn. Construction is well underway on 1515 Surf Ave., a 471,000-square-foot residential and retail complex in Coney Island, the neighborhood best known for its amusement park and hot dogs. The development, which is slated to open in 2024, won’t use any fossil fuels for heating, cooling or hot water — only geothermal. About one-third of the project’s apartments, or 139 units, are designated as affordable housing.”  A number of NY-GEO Members are involved in these projects including EcoSave, CDM Smith, Allied Geothermal Drilling, Salas O’Brien and ZBF Geothermal – who won the GeoSmart Top Job Award in 2021 for Beach Green Dunes project. Full article here.

Eugene Oregon – No Gas in New Residential Construction Starting July, 2023 – “The ordinance requires that all new residential construction, including single-family homes and multi-family buildings three stories and below, be constructed all-electric starting June 30, 2023… Eugene is the 97th city across the country to pass a climate policy incentivizing or requiring electric appliances in new homes and buildings. New all-electric homes in Eugene cut climate pollution by 74% compared to homes that burn gas, while lowering utility bills by nearly $400 annually, according to an analysis from RMI.” NAACP Eugene Springfield, Eugene Springfield Tenants Association, Beyond Toxics, Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, and Sunrise Eugene were among the organizations supporting the ban.  . Sierra Club press release here.

Vermont Gas Utility Includes Geothermal in its Carbon-Cutting Portfolio – Lisa Prevost – Energy News Network – Director of Energy Innovation at Vermont Gas Systems, Richard “Donnelly said Vermont Gas has been trying to develop a business model around geothermal for the past two years, ‘primarily because it’s a unique way for the company to use its core functions and decarbonize.’ The company is currently considering the feasibility of installing its first networked system at a multifamily housing construction project that includes some affordable units. They are largely focused on new construction projects as possible testing grounds because it is easier to put in a system where the ground hasn’t been developed yet, Donnelly said.”  Full article here.
