Rewiring America Posts Savings Calculator – Quoting an email from Jamal Lewis of Recharging America: “…the IRA [Inflation Reduction Act] incudes a number of consumer-facing incentives that will supercharge the electrification movement all across the country. To help consumers understand these incentives, Rewiring America has just released a Savings Calculator! The Calculator tells consumers which incentives apply to them, how much they’ll save on electrification investments by utilizing IRA incentives, when consumers can claim these incentives, and what their estimated annual bill savings will be by electrifying their lives. Check out the Savings Calculator here!” While NY-GEO can’t vouch for the accuracy of the calculated savings, which depend greatly on the characteristics of a given building/vehicle combination, Rewiring America has taken a bold first step in helping Americans imagine the how they can benefit from the IRA. The chart below from the website is an informative listing of incentives in the IRA.

Which states have the most heat pumps? – Maria Virginia Olano – Canary Media – “More than 17 million U.S. homes have central heat pumps. Most of them are in states you might not expect… Heat pumps’ popularity in Southern states is due in part to the fact that many homes in the South are already all-electric; they don’t have gas connections. The South is the U.S. region that’s most reliant on electricity for heating and least reliant on direct use of gas or other fossil fuels. Another factor at play is the age of housing stock. As Bloomberg News recently explained, ‘States where a lot of the housing was built before World War II, and where gas distribution networks were established long ago, are less likely to have a lot of all-electric homes.’”  Full article here.

What does it mean locally?… Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer told THE CITY in an interview that the legislation could be a boon for New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which was signed into law three years ago… ‘It’s going to help implement the CLCPA because one of the things missing in the CLCPA was enough money to implement it,’ Schumer said. ‘Now there will be plenty of money to help.’”  Full article here.
