February 4: Vermont Transit Equity Day Conversations and Awards.

On Thursday, February 4th at 7 pm, the Vermont Sierra Club, with support from Transportation for Vermonters and the Vermont Natural Resources Council, will be hosting a virtual Transit Equity Day celebration promoting public transit as a civil right and effective means of combating climate change.

The Vermont Sierra Club is joining this day of this action on Feb 4 by hosting our first-ever Transit Equity Awards, a Transit Equity Day Virtual Conversation with transit leaders and award winners. Throughout the month of January, we will be accepting nominations for community volunteers, public servants, businesses, nonprofits, and municipalities. Nominations can be made via email to robb.kidd@sierraclub.org with a brief statement of why a nominee is deserving of an award.

The awards will be presented on Feb 4 at 7 pm at our Transit Equity Day Virtual Conversation. We will host Laura Jacoby of Old Spokes Home in regards to her involvement in the Transportation Equity Coalition. Old Spokes Home is building a Transportation Equity Coalition made up of individuals and organizations who represent communities ill-served by our current transportation systems.  Coalition members will give an overview of transportation equity, the critical role it plays in achieving social justice, and what it looks like in Vermont.

February 4th holds additional meaning being the birthday of legendary civil rights icon Rosa Parks. In the spirit of her memory, the Sierra Club and our partner organizations hope you will join us in our celebration of her memory as we look to Vermont’s clean and just transit future.
