Wed, Dec 9: National & Vermont State Leaders on Energy Equity and Recovery

Dec 9 Conference Assesses Paths to Equitable Access to Clean Energy and Role of Clean Energy in Economic Recovery

In partnership with the Vermont Energy and Climate Action Network (VECAN), Renewable Energy Vermont convenes the final, virtual session of REV2020 at 9:00 am on Wednesday, December 9th. Business leaders, policy makers, community leaders and environmental advocates will gather for an engaging discussion of energy equity and economic recovery. The energy and equity nexus requires us to support and partner with frontline and low-income communities and to implement equitable energy policies so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of affordable clean power.

At 9:00, we welcome Coreina Chan of the Rocky Mountain Institute to facilitate a conversation with Stephan Roundtree, Jr. of Vote Solar, and Eleanor Stein of the Albany Law School. These speakers will share their experiences and insights on moving beyond intent to embed equity principles and inclusive and accountable processes into our daily energy and climate work.

At 10:10 am, Sue Minter of Capstone Community Action will moderate a panel discussion devoted to specific approaches and strategies for building energy equity, including the new climate accountability framework of the Global Warming Solutions Act. Expert practitioners will show how understanding total energy burden – for electricity, heating, and transportation – leads to the creation of more effective and equitable opportunities. Speakers include Michael DiRamio of the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency, Eugenia Gibbons of Health Care Without Harm, Jennifer Green and Darren Springer of the Burlington Electric Department, and Kelly Lucci of Efficiency Vermont.

At 11:45 am, Tom Berry of Senator Patrick Leahy’s office provides an overview of federal support for local and state economic recovery efforts and opportunities for equitable climate resiliency as we build back better in 2021. Get the inside scoop on new possibilities and ongoing challenges for the 117th Congress and the Biden/Harris administration.
