Role for Efficiency in State and Provincial Programs to Price Carbon
Date: January 3, 2019 Time: 12:00-1:00 pm ET
Across North America, efforts to put a price on greenhouse gas emissions are growing, creating a market-based incentive to reduce emissions and energy use. Currently 14 US states and Canadian provinces plus one US city have done so, with seven additional states and provinces in active pursuit. ACEEE’s new whitepaper, State and Provincial Efforts to Put a Price on Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Implications for Energy Efficiency, explores these programs, lessons learned and opportunities for energy efficiency.
This webinar will feature a discussion of two major approaches that are now in use—a carbon tax (sometimes called a fee or levy) and a cap and trade system, both of which can improve energy efficiency. Presentations will include an overview of the programs currently in place and those being considered in the US and Canada, opportunities to incorporate energy efficiency in these programs, and recommendations for jurisdictions to consider going forward.
Speakers will include:
- Steve Nadel, lead author and Executive Director, ACEEE
- Cassandra Kubes, co-author and Research Manager, Health and Environment, ACEEE.
- Brendan Haley, PhD, Policy Director, Efficiency Canada
