As our federal government takes us backwards on the environmental front, it is becoming clearer and clearer that we as individuals need to take the lead toward the renewable future. We can save money (in the long run) and possibly save our planet, if we all start converting from fossil fuels to renewable energy. We can influence our local towns and cities to come along with us and eventually the states and nation will have to join us. Market forces along with political pressure together can transform our country.

But here in the Northeast, annual expenses related to burning fossil fuels for heat and hot water are usually more expensive than electricity. Combustion in buildings also accounts for 32% of the greenhouse gas emissions in NYS – which is considerably greater than emissions from the state’s electric power plants.

Mr. Ciovacco will explain what geothermal energy is, and how it can be used to heat, and indeed, cool buildings. He will also talk about the economic and environmental impacts of switching from a fossil fuel system to an electrically driven renewable heating and cooling system. He will update us on NYSERDA’s (NY State Energy Research and Development Authority) newly formed Renewable Heating and Cooling Division and the $15 million grant program recently authorized by Governor Cuomo.
