Researchers at Environment Canada, a department of the federal government, provided a study of human-caused bird deaths in Canada. Causation is both direct and indirect, so cats are counted because they are a non-native species introduced by European settlers. The study can be found at http://www.ace-eco.org/vol8/iss2/art11/
