Common Sense Energy and the Building Performance Professionals Association are hosting an open house co-hosted by Building for Social Responsibility and the Vermont Green Building Network.

About the house:

A 1950’s ranch with an early 1960’s addition. Part of the original addition is being renovated with double stud walls and dense-pack cellulose. A cathedral ceiling with exposed beams was also insulated with rigid and cellulose insulation in keeping with the original charm of the beams. A crawlspace below the addition is being insulated with an innovative cellulose “diaper” design. The main foundation is insulated with rigid on the exterior. Light tubes and high performance skylights provide day lighting, while ventilation is provided by an exhaust-only system. An inventive enclosure around the interior chimney in the attic space to capture conductive heat loss from the chimney and duct it back into the living space.

A new addition is also being constructed on the south elevation, allowing us to dissect the original house and glimpse insulation strategies (or lack thereof) of the 1950’s / 1960’s (Hint: 2” of fiberglass reinforced with packing peanuts).

Other features of the new addition include:

– Shallow frost protected footings
– ICF’s (insulated concrete forms) for foundation
– Innovative air and thermal barrier designs for custom building details
– Advanced framing techniques
– Use of dense pack cellulose in floors, walls and slanted ceilings
– Use of various reclaimed materials to include triple pane fiberglass windows.
– On demand DHW heater
