Friends of the Northfield Ridge: Sept 22 Presentation 5:00pm

Dear Neighbor:

As president of Friends of the Northfield Ridge, I would like to invite you to join me at The Skinner Barn in Waitsfield on Wednesday, September 22nd for an informational presentation concerning wind power development on the ridgelines of  Vermont .

Friends of the Northfield Ridge is hosting the event.

We will have two guest speakers with us for the evening — Annette Smith, Executive Director of Vermonters for a Clean Environment, and Dr. Ben Luce, Professor of Physics and Chairman of the Sustainability Studies program
at  Lyndon  State . Professor Luce describes himself as a “wind guy” and worked to secure tax incentives that made possible a large wind farm in  New Mexico . Annette lives off the grid and on the land and works statewide on issues of sustainability. Both have extensive experience with renewable energy efforts nationally and in  Vermont and will offer insights into the regulatory and technical aspects of the industrial wind debate.

We will gather at 5:00 PM for light refreshments (snacks and soft drinks). The presentations will begin at 5.30 and are expected to last one hour total, after which we invite you to share your thoughts and
questions with Ms. Smith and Dr. Luce.

Friends of the Northfield Ridge is a registered not-for-profit organization focused on educational activities. We are strongly pro-renewable energy and pro-energy conservation as alternatives to fossil fuels. We are in favor of wind when turbines are properly scaled and sited.

Friends of the Northfield Ridge has planned this presentation to begin a community-wide dialog concerning the pros and cons of industrial wind development. After examining industrial wind project descriptions and details, we have many questions and concerns related to the efficiency and impacts of these power plants and are beginning to understand that
Vermont ridgelines are simply not appropriate sites for utility-sized wind turbines. We have also discovered that there are viable alternatives that make a lot of sense.

I hope that you will join us for an informative discussion.

Yours sincerely,
David Howe

President, Friends of the Northfield Ridge
