Offshore wind energy development in Germany started in 2007 and construction of the first offshore wind farm was completed in 2009. Following the Japanese nuclear accident in 2011,
Germany’s federal government made a decision to further increase offshore wind energy development, with a goal to reach a total installed capacity of 7.6 GW by 2020 and as much as
26 GW by 2030. TenneT Offshore GmbH is responsible for the design, planning, construction and operation of interconnections for all offshore wind farms in Germany. By the end of 2017,
TenneT has provided transmission for over 5.2 GW offshore wind energy, most of which uses high-voltage dc (HVDC) technology. This seminar is organized by the Center for Future Energy Systems (CFES) as part of its effort to support offshore wind energy development in New York. The seminar will be presented by Dr. Christoph Buchhagen from TenneT Offshore GmbH and will cover the following topics:
 Overview of Offshore Wind Development in Germany
 Regulatory Framework for Renewable Energy and Offshore Wind
 Transmission Technology Options and Considerations
 Commissioning and Operating Offshore Wind: Experiences and Lessons Learned
 New Development and Future Trends

Presenter: Dr. Christoph Buchhagen studied Electrical Engineering at Leibniz Universität Hannover in Germany and received his Diploma degree in 2009. He worked as a research
assistant at the same university from 2013 and received his doctorate in 2015. Since 2015 he has been with TenneT TSO GmbH in the Asset Management Department where he is responsible for
the connection of offshore wind farms, mainly by using high-voltage dc technologies. His work is mainly focused on wind farm and transmission system studies, fault analysis, power quality,
and stability and resonance problems.
