Keystone Victory!

sierra clubYou did it!

They said that it couldn’t be done. They said our sights were too high. That Keystone XL was a “done deal” and would be approved just like any other oil pipeline.

But you didn’t believe them. You knew that with hard work, and by standing together, we could beat Big Oil and stop their dirty and dangerous pipeline that would divide our country in two. And in doing so, we could point the way to a clean energy future.

That’s why today, after more than seven years of hard work and amazing dedication, we achieved a monumental victory in the fight to protect our planet from the disastrous effects of fossil fuels and carbon pollution: President Obama just announced that he will reject the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline in order to protect our climate.

By rejecting Keystone XL, the president has proven that he is serious about fighting climate disruption, and not afraid to take bold action to protect future generations.

Thank President Obama for taking courageous action by rejecting Keystone XL and protecting our climate!

We weren’t supposed to win this fight. When Keystone XL was proposed more than seven years ago, conventional wisdom — from oil industry insiders to the media and politicians — claimed it was inevitable. When the environmental movement stood up and said “Not so fast!” in a loud and unified voice, they said we were fighting a lost cause.

Over the last few years, we proved that nothing is inevitable when we have the strength of millions of changemakers — people just like you — coming together to protect the planet for future generations. President Obama once said, “Nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change.” He was right — You demanded that he reject a pipeline to the dirtiest oil on the planet, and he listened.

Show you support President Obama’s decision to reject Keystone XL! Take a moment to thank him for taking bold action to protect our climate.

We have shown that the environmental movement is a force to be reckoned with. We took on Big Oil, legions of lobbyists and bought-and-paid-for politicians — and we WON. We won because this movement has something they don’t: it has committed activists like you.

This historic moment doesn’t mark the end of the campaign — it marks the beginning. This victory will send shockwaves through the fossil fuel industry, and put all trans-border tar sands pipelines — and all harmful fossil fuel projects — on notice. Business-as-usual is over. It’s time to keep dirty fuels in the ground.

This is also an important opportunity to thank President Obama for being a champion for the environment, and let him know that we will keep fighting to protect the planet from carbon pollution.

Send a quick message to President Obama thanking him for courageously standing up to the dirty fuels industry and saying enough is enough!

There will be other opportunities to go even further to protect our planet, but today is a day for celebrating how far we’ve come.

Thank you for making this day possible,

Michael Brune
Sierra Club Executive Director
