Four companies received green awards from Efficiency VT at the recent “2012 Better Buildings By Design” conference in Burlington. Building Energy won in the “Best of the Best in Major Renovation” contest for rehabilitating an historic home located at 52 Drew Street in Burlington, VT. Maclay Architects, Naylor & Breen Builders, and MSV Partners, LLC won in the “Best of the Best in Commercial Building Design and Construction” for their work to develop the new South Village Professional Office Building in Middlebury.
Primary features of the Drew project were restoring the original architectural features of the 1859 home, re-insulating the entire house and updating the interior finishes. Overall heat energy savings are projected to be 70% and electrical consumption is anticipated to decrease by at least 38%.
The South Village Professional Office Building achieved exceptional air sealing numbers. Sandy LaFlamme of Efficiency Vermont stated that, “This is one of the tightest commercial buildings tested by Efficiency Vermont – and it also achieved Core Performance, a nationally recognized set of high-performing building standards offered through Efficiency Vermont.” Construction of the South Village Professional Office Building was completed in March 2011. The two story, 17,000 square foot office building is sited within Middlebury South Village, a 31 acre master-planned community that is a winner of the 2008 Smart Growth Award. MSV brings the feel of the village south along Court Street. The master plan of multiple buildings, integral green spaces, thoughtful landscaping and pedestrian amenities takes full advantage of the property’s central location within easy walking distance to major employers, the county’s largest shopping center, schools and recreation facilities.
