VT Law School Experts Available to Comment On Today’s U.S. Supreme Court Ruling

SOUTH ROYALTON, VT –– Vermont Law School has faculty experts available to comment on the U.S. Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling this morning in the global warming case American Electric Power v. Connecticut.
The Court overturned a 2009 federal appeal court decision that allowed several states and environmental groups to sue coal-fired electric utilities on the grounds that their emissions create a public nuisance by contributing to global warming.
The case tried to use common law to force industries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but the Court ruled that the Clean Air Act and the EPA’s actions under the Act displace the claims that are made under public nuisance laws.
